Answering Your Call

Betty Magana, Administrative Coordinator, ALS United Illinois

Meet Elizabeth Magana, fondly known as Betty, a dedicated professional with a passion for making a difference in people’s lives. Before joining ALS United Illinois, Betty spent six years in the banking industry, amassing valuable customer service experience. We are so glad that she found her way to ALS United Illinois at the end of 2022, where she’s become an invaluable member of the team as Administrative Coordinator.

As the first point of contact for individuals reaching out to ALS United Illinois, could you describe how you provide support and guidance to those seeking help?

As the first point of contact it’s important to make sure everyone that calls feels supported. Typically when someone first calls, they have no knowledge of all the resources and services we provide. I always want to make sure they feel heard and to know we are here to help. I like to explain the mission of our organization. It’s important for them to understand what we do is for of them.

What are some common inquiries or needs that individuals with ALS typically reach out to the organization for, and how do you assist them in addressing these concerns?

Many times the first time someone is reaching out is right after finding out of their diagnosis. They often have questions about doctors, clinics, and more. I explain to them the roles of our Care Services Coordinators, who are experts not only in the ALS journey, but experts on local resources in our community – both from our organization and beyond.

Equipment donation and lending is also a big inquiry received, whether it’s to request equipment or individuals looking to donate. Ensuring we are on top of their requests and questions is the best way to aid.

In your role as an Administrative Coordinator, how do you collaborate with the event staff and care services team to ensure smooth operations and successful events?

As the Administrative Coordinator I often am the first point of contact for individuals looking to volunteer, donate, and participate in our events via email or phone call. I reach out to team captains that participated in previous years’ Walks to Defeat ALS to ensure they are informed on upcoming events and to assist in possible questions they have. Preparation for an event is a big part of my role, ensuring everything needed to set up makes it to the event location. Lastly, anything that needs to be packaged and mailed out is an important part of my role.

Can you provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into a typical day in your role? What are some of the activities or projects you typically work on?

On a typical day of work, I start off my day by reviewing emails, making sure responses are prompt is key. Phone calls vary from day to day, one day it could be very busy and others quiet. If I am not working on reports, equipment lending, or donations, I also prep a lot of packages to be mailed out. For example, TeamALS shirts for Bank of America Chicago Marathon runners.

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your role?

Some of the most rewarding aspects of my role is speaking with individuals living with ALS or their caregivers, many times when receiving a call, it’s a loved one in need of help. Knowing I can provide just a bit of solace in someone’s day is one of the best feelings I am thankful to experience. Knowing we have an amazing team that is knowledgeable, committed, and considerate really makes this job even more rewarding.

Can you share a favorite memory or highlight from your time with ALS United Illinois so far?

My favorite memory so far has been my first Walk to Defeat ALS event: the Chicago Walk to Defeat ALS in June. Seeing how so many people come together to support one another for those living with ALS and who have unfortunately passed was a feeling that’s hard to describe. It was a very humbling experience.
