From First Race to Marathon: A Runner’s Tribute to Her Father

Melanie Dittrich, ALS United Illinois Ambassador and Team ALS Runner

“I am super excited to be participating in both the Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend Half-Marathon and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Team ALS. I am running in memory of my dad, Rick, who passed away from ALS in 2009.

I have always wanted to be a runner. It wasn’t until October 2024 that I participated in my first race, a two-mile run.

I remember thinking it was too much of a reach to run a marathon just one short year later. After speaking with Sarah and a few friends, I realized it absolutely was something I could do.
I have cried so many happy tears because of the outpouring of support I’ve received for fundraising. Being able to call myself a runner, while being involved with ALS United Illinois, means the world to me.

Knowing that I have had even a small part in the fight against ALS is indescribable. I would highly encourage anyone who might be a bit scared just to take that first step. It has truly been an empowering journey.”
